Tour yearbook's theme accurately reflects
my vision of all of you over ike fast four
years. You've "changed right before
my eyes" > developing into a unified group
of focused young adults. Tour perseverance
and determination will most certainly serve
you wed as you travel down future roads.
May those paths be smooth, successful, and
healthy ones for each and every one of you,
I'm proud to have served as your class
advisor for three of your four years and will
always remember our efforts together.

1 here were Sophomore Summer Parties everywhere this year.
One vacation highlight was the Going Away Party for Laura Houle

that took place at the home of Erin Shea. A good day with good

MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

MRHS Graduates of 1998, congratulations on reaching your
academic goals as you prepare to receive a high school diplo-
ma; the first concrete symbol of the exciting changes that will
be occurring in this next stage of your life. As your yearbook
theme states, you have been "Changing Right Before Our
Eyes." Over the past four years at Minnechaug you have
formed lasting friendships, attained your goals, and left a
legacy of scholastic achievement, community service, athletic
accomplishments, and unwavering school spirit. Minnechaug
will never be the same without you. You have changed for the
better, becoming generous friends, enthusiastic club members,
and positive role models for the underclassmen.

The next 18 years will probably bring the most dramatic
changes you will ever experience as you witness the turning of
the century and complete the final steps of your passage into
adulthood. Be prepared for the many changes you will face.
Welcome change, work with it, expect it, and most important-
ly, plan for it. The most valued skill in the workplace of the
21st century will be one's ability to adapt to change. The only
constant in our lives is change, so the question will not be
"What will I do if changes occur?" but rather, "What will I do
when change happens?"

We all wish you well and encourage you to embrace the
future, and all the challenges it entails with the same en-
thusiasm and perseverance that have characterized your high
school career at Minnechaug. Good Luck !

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Your yearbook theme for 1998, "Changing
Right Before Our Eyes," is a most appropriate
way to remember your senior year of high
school. We were all amazed with the flexibility
and support that you as a senior class, demon-
strated as we implemented a new schedule. It
was difficult to deal with the loss of a senior
study lounge, a later graduation date, and
longer classes with more academic demands;
yet the class of '98 displayed leadership to
younger students as we entered a new era.

Life is about change and each of you will
enter a world which has seen more growth,
change, and development than any previous
generation. The work force of the future will
require adaptability and flexibility. Many of
you will spend your lives involved in careers
which do not exist today! We believe you are
well prepared for that unique challenge.

As you leave Minnechaug and prepare to
enter the next phase of your lives, I would
hope that you would keep the lessons of your
senior year at the forefront of your conscious-
ness. Look toward the future with anticipa-
tion, vision, and openness. Congratulations
and best wishes.

FOOTBALL

The story this year isn't just our Fired-
up Falcons, but that their field finally
got "THE FALCON LIGHTS". As you can
see on these pages the LIGHTS are great!
Appreciative crowds have flocked to our
first games under the lights and other Min-
nechaug teams have started to take advan-
tage of this opportunity to alter their sched-
ules to include night games. Lights aside,

our Varsity has had an unsettling spell of bad
weather, injuries, and tough breaks. But,
we've played hard and once again earned
respect all over the valley. Our 1-10 Varsity
record didn't reflect the great battles and
great plays we've made. How about Dan Far-
rell stepping in as QB against Amherst and
scoring on a sneak from 1 foot out, that was
set up by a 63-yard run by Garett Trombly?

Gymnastic Team Captain Sophomore
Christine Lohan led this band of talented
tumblers into another historic season. While it
was supposed to be a building year after the loss
of several graduating stand-outs we didn't rest
on our laurels. We jumped on every chance to
show our stuff to any who came to challenge us.
Coach Emily Peters kept us sharp and ready
excel. This is a tough sport and our keen "mat

sense ,, carried us through. Juniors Sarah
Broadbent, Rachel Rediker, Haley Brown ,
and Ashley Cowles showed newcomers Ra-
chel Duffany, Rachel Willis, Jen Parker, and
Adrienne Howe about the proud FALCON
tradition that they have stepped into. FAL-
CON Fans have continued to support this
fine team with good crowds and obvious dis-

CHEERLEADING

We never know just where to put the Varsity
and JV MRHS Cheerleaders in the Year-
book. They really work during all the sports sea-
sons. Just when Football is over and you might
think the Cheerleaders are done we hear about
another competition that they entered and
dominated. These two talented teams work hard
and never get a break in the pace. Basketball

wouldn't be the same without this spirited
squad. And this year, we saw one more mo-
ment in Minnechaug history as the team
cheered on our Varsity Football Team in
their win against West Springfield in the first
game ever under the FALCON LIGHTS.
Alot of push-ups were done that night!

GOLF

Golf had been a spring sport and late snows
were keeping the team off the links. So it was
changed to the fall to allow for more playing time.
Then "El Nino'97" arrived and brought snow be-
fore Thanksgiving. Even with all this our golfers
kept on slugging. Enough to land the team in the
Western Massachusetts Tournament and place Se-
an Mahoney in the State Tournament. Co-
Captains Steve Reilly and Chris Burr drove the
team toward perfection and both deserve a lot of

the credit for our big win over rival Long-
meadow. Adding both style and strength to
the team, Katie Polchlopek joins us as our
first female golfer. With talk around about
expanding the Wilbraham Country Club to
full size and the strong showing made in each
of our outings by our underclass players we
see nothing but growth and great times ahead
for the Minnechaug Varsity and JV Golf
teams.

Hard work, strong practices, drills and

The JV ended at 2-7-8. Varsity goalie Becky

The Distance Dynamos continue to run
over the competition. Minnechaug has a
long, proud tradition of excellence on the
cross country course. A lot of hard work and
gruelling miles must be logged to maintain
the level of performance that we have
achieved. This year Coach Hill, along with
Girl's Co-Captains Sue Ferranti and Molly

Popkin, had many thrilling moments. Upsets over
rivals Cathedral and Longmeadow were just two
of the high points of the season. Coach Jeff Bohnet
led the Boy's Cross Country Team through many
tough, but rewarding miles. We have two very fine
teams that gave us a great season and we know
many more great seasons will follow.

J illian Danker scores 2000 career points !
And that was just one of the headlines we
saw this season. The Varsity Girl's Basketball
team ended the regular season with a 18-2
record, ranked second in the league at tourna-
ment time. Jillian, along with Senior Co-
Captain Katie Moynahan and Coach Jim
Girotti were awesome throughout the season.

With all this going on it would be very easy to miss
a key story here that is just developing. Did you
know that Coach Trimmer led the Freshman
Girl's Basketball Team to a 16-1 record ? We're
talkin' dynasty here ! Let the word go out to our
future opponents that this is a program with depth
we haven't begun to explore.

A matching set of "Team Efforts" boosted

Diving Teams to matching 12-2 records. Both
teams also won hard fought third place finishes
in the PVIAC Tournament. Captains Mike
Murphy and Emily Osborne pushed their swim-
mers and divers to excellent performances both
home and away this year. Senior Brian Dono-
van was named "Outstanding Swimmer/ Senior
High Point Award Winner" for scoring the

most career points at Western Massachusetts
Championships. Brian was also named the
"Raymond DeForge Scholar/ Athlete" by the
PVIAC. This was a year of award winning
performance and thrilling endings. The meet
where the Girl's Team beat rival Long-

other hot season of Ice Hockey. Co-
Captains Zach Ashwell, James Blume, Ryan

ward under the skilled leadership of Coaches
Pat O'Brien and Pete Dufresne. Always capable
Goalie Justin Anderson put in some tough time
in the net and always proved a strong defender
for the "Green and White". Many will say that

our near perfect performance leading to a 2-0
victory over rival West Side was a high point
of the season. We skated hard and showed
precision every time we hit the ice. Ice hockey
is one of the high contact sports that produce
many injuries and we had our share but re-
mained strong and closed the season a strong-
er and better team.

"Minncchaug
Creates"

The secret is out ! Minnechaug is one large creative, productive, place
filled with students and staff who are constantly composing, building,
sculpting, writing, painting, and makin' stuff at an incredible pace. From
the Consumer Science classes on one end of the building to the Scientists
up on the third floor, we do create ! So join with us over the next pages as
we take a closer look at just a few of the creative endeavors undertaken
this year at Minnechaug. Right here we see Mrs. Bowerman's Baking
Classes and Mr. Weatherhead's Drafting Classes in an interdisciplinary
unit computer-designing and then baking and constructing Gingerbread
Houses.

Gingerbread Houses and more grace the
recently rehabbed Van West Gallery.

Mr. Dan Balser is seen here helping his
students in one of the sections of the
newly created class in Web Page Cre-

fully on-line and added alot of new hard-
ware including a scanner, Zip Drives, and
new color printers to the existing CAD
Drawing computers, printers and plotters.

Our special thanks to

SUCCESS

To laugh often and much:

To win the respect of intelligent people
and the affection of children:

To earn the appreciation of honest critics
And endure the betrayal of false friends:

To appreciate beauty,
To find the best in others:

To leave the world a bit better,

Whether by a healthy child,

A garden patch,

Or a redeemed social condition;

To know one life has breathed easier
Because you have lived

This is to have succeeded!

Everything we were used to really was "changing right
before our eyes" and not all of us on your FALCON
Yearbook Staff liked it ! We lost the Senior Lounge, "early
graduation", short periods, study halls, February and April Va-
cations and we, the FALCON Yearbook Staff lost our class period.
(The Elements of Publishing Class fell to "alternate day B-Blocks"
and borderline enrollment.) Everything we held "near and dear to
our hearts" had been taken from us in the name of progress. But .
. . once we caught our breath . . . and tried to look for a "silver
lining" ... we noticed that . . . (dare we admit it?) . . . things
weren't all that bad. We determined early on not to let any of this
change the FALCON we had already set out to compose. But . . .
even that concept rapidly changed ! Pretty quickly even the most
cynical among us realized that the joke was on us! Our theme
became a daily reminder that

THINGS WERE CHANGING RIGHT BEFORE OUR EYES

. . .BUT. . .

CHANGE WASN'T ALWAYS A BAD THING!!!

Sure, we've got a long way to go, but, we're pretty pleased with

the way things turned out: both our efforts toward the 1998

Yearbook that you are holding in your hands and the "Year of the

Block" in general. For this year's new goal we challenged

ourselves to show every one of you at least 2 times in this book!

Let us know if we did ! We are checking the accounts now, but

hope to have a Spring Supplement for you in Sept-Oct 98 to

include Graduation, the Prom, Spring Sports, and more. We

welcome all suggestions and photo submissions. Just drop them

in the Yearbook mailbox in the Main Office, or, better yet, join us

in making FALCON '99 and the upcoming

Millenium Issue.

We leave you with a few last photos
we just couldn't leave out !
